Guest Post: Top 3 Homemade Cleaners

Today I'm joined by Ashley from Forgetful Momma.  Ashley is a green momma who uses cloth diapers and makes all of her family's laundry detergent and cleaning products.  She has graciously agreed to share three of her favorite cleaning recipes with us today.  Welcome, Ashley!

Hello to Bonnie's readers here at The Not So Modern Housewife! I am Ashley from Forgetful Momma, previously known as Bottles, Diapers... Babies. I am stopping by today to share my favorite cleaning product recipes. I have three that I use in my house on a daily or weekly basis.

Homemade All Purpose Cleaner

All Purpose Cleaner

My first favorite is the first homemade cleaner that I made and am still using everyday, all purpose cleaner. We are currently on a boil water advisory so my water is fresh from the pot. You don't have to use boiling water, but if you do, make sure to let it cool before pouring it into your spray bottle.  I have made that mistake before.
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 tsps borax
  • 1/2 tsp washing soda
  • 2 tbsps lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
I start by putting the borax and washing soda in the bottom of a measuring cup, adding the hot water to dissolve them. Then add lemon juice and vinegar.

Homemade Bathroom Cleaner

Bathroom Cleaner

My second favorite cleaner is for the bathroom. This is also so simple.
  • 1/4 cup Dawn
  • 1/2 cup hot vinegar
I heat my vinegar in the microwave, two birds one stone - vinegar will loosen any stuck on mess in the microwave making it easier to wipe clean. Simply add the Dawn to the hot vinegar, pour into your desired container. Usually I use a fill-able dish wand, it makes scrubbing the shower and tub so easy. However, I haven't gotten one yet since the move so spray bottle it is, and it works just as great. I use it all over my bathroom. It was perfect for moving into a new house and giving the bathroom a good scrubbing.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Laundry Detergent

My third favorite homemade cleaner, and probably most used, is my laundry detergent. I have tried so many different types, both store bought and homemade. I find this one super easy, quick and the current scent is amazing.
  • 1/3 cup borax
  • 1/3 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup Dawn - any scent
  • 8 cups Water
I always add my borax and washing soda to an empty container, then adding very hot water to dissolve them, 4 cups of hot water. Then I add 4 more cups of water, add the Dawn and give it a good shake - over a sink. I use 1/2 cup for a regular sized load of laundry. I've used it in both top loading and front loading without any issues.

I hope you'll like these homemade cleaners as much as I do. I'd love for you to stop over and check out Forgetful Momma for recipes, fun activities, more homemade cleaner recipes and more! You can also find me on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest
